TSK-GEL GPC columns for organic-soluble polymers are packed with spherical particles composed of polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene (PS-DVB). Main differences between the available product lines are highlighted in the Table below.

Tosoh redefines GPC calibration.
Tosoh's innovative multi-pore technology produces particles that contain a broad range of pore sizes. Columns with an extended linear calibration curve can now be prepared without mixing particles of different pore sizes.

TSK-GEL SuperH and TSK-GEL SuperHZ columns were developed for High-Throughput GPC applications. Both product lines feature particle sizes down to 3μm, a column length of 15cm and column diameters of 6mm ID and 4.6mm ID (SuperHZ only).

TSK-GEL Hxl and TSK-GEL Hhr columns are conventional GPC columns of 7.8mm ID x 30cm, while particles sizes are 5µm and larger for the larger pore size columns.

 Highlights
  • Tosoh manufactures two distinct product lines for GPC of organic-soluble polymers. While each line is based on particles prepared from polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene, they differ in:
    • degree of inertness, and
    • operating temperature range
  • TSK-GEL Hxl-type, SuperHZ-type, and SuperMultiporeHZ-type columns are most inert to sample adsorption.
  • TSK-GEL Hhr- and SuperH-type columns provide minimal shrinking and swelling of the column bed when changing solvents and allow operation up to 140°C.
  • Small particle, narrow bore SuperMultiporeHZ, SuperHZ and SuperH columns provide high efficiency, short analysis times and operating cost.
  • Except for SuperMultiporeHZ columns, all other TSK-GEL H-type column lines contain at least five different pore sizes.
  • Each product line contains columns for the analysis of oligomers to polymers containing molecular weights as high as as 4 x 10^8Da (estimated).
  • All product lines contain a number of linear columns that are prepared by blending particles with different pore sizes.

TSK-GEL Hxl-type Columns for Reduced Polymer Adsorption and Limited Solvent Range

The TSK-GEL Hxl column lines consists of eight columns with different pore sizes, TSKgel G1000Hxl through TSKgel G7000Hxl, and three columns with an extended linear range of the calibration curve, TSKgel GMHxl, TSKgel GMHxl-L and TSKgel MultiporeHxl-M. The calibration curves are shown to the right.

Main characteristics

  • Ultra-low sample adsorption, i.e., the columns show true size exclusion behavior for most polymers
  • Maximum operating temperature for Hxl-type columns is 60°C for G1000Hxl, G2000Hxl, G2500Hxl and G3000Hxl, and 80°C for the remaining columns in the product line. See Hhr-type columns for operating temperatures of 140°C.
  • Limited solvent range. The columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a limited number of organic solvents (see Table below)
  • Hxl-type columns are conventional GPC columns with column dimensions of 7.8mm ID x 30cm. Most HPLC systems do not require optimization of extra-column bandbroadening effects when working with conventional GPC columns.

  1. In case of SuperHZ and Hxl, keep flow rate below <0.5mL/min during solvent change. Solvent can be changed one way/one time only.
  2. All TSK-GEL Hxl, Hhr, SuperHZ, SuperH and GMH analytical columns are shipped containing tetrahydrofuran (THF), except GMH-HT columns, which contain o-dichlorobenzene.
  3. THF in G1000Hxl columns cannot be replaced with dichloromethane or dichloroethane.
  4. Prolonged exposure to carbon tetrachloride can corrode the stainless steel parts of a column and an HPLC system.

*  100% methanol cannot be used with H-type columns; use this solvent with TSK-GEL SW-type or Alpha-type columns.
** TSK-GEL H columns may be specially ordered with this shipping solvent.

Columns with linear calibration curves
Two of the linear columns are so-called mixed-bed columns, in which particles with different pore sizes are blended to provide an extended linear calibration curve. The remaining column is a so-called multi-pore column, in which each particle contains a range of pore sizes that provide a linear calibration curve. The innovative multi-pore approach, pioneered by Tosoh, is a synthetic chemistry answer to the question of how to obtain a column with an extended linear calibration curve, while mixed-bed columns represent a mechanical way of obtaining a linear calibration curve. In general, Multipore columns have a smoother, more linear, calibration curve. See the product page for Multipore Hxl-M for the principles behind mixed-bed and multi-pore columns.

TSK-GEL G1000Hxl columns are packed with rigid, porous, polymer beads. G1000Hxl columns are applied to the non-aqueous separation of small molecules and oligomers less than 1,000 Da.

TSKgel MultiporeHxl-M

TSK-GEL MultiporeHxl-M columns are packed with rigid, polymer beads that have a large pore size distribution within each particle, for the analysis of organic-soluble industrial polymers. Multipore linear columns are used when a broad range of polymer molecular weights is expected in the sample. They provide a smoother calibration curve than a mixed-bed linear column. TSKgel MultiporeHxl-M provides high resolution of polymers with a molecular weight up to several million Da.
The shipping sovent THF can be replaced by benzene, chloroform, toluene and xylene, but not with dichloromethane and dichloroethane. As the number of solvents that can be exchanged directly with the shipping solvent is limited, use TSK-GEL Hhr-type columns when a broader range of organic solvents is needed.

TSK-GEL SuperHZ-type Columns for Reduced Polymer Adsorption and Limited Solvent Range

The TSK-GEL SuperHZ column line consists of five columns with different pore sizes, TSKgel SuperHZ1000 through TSKgel SuperHZ4000, and three columns with an extended linear range of the calibration curve, TSKgel SuperHZM-N, TSKgel SuperHZM-M and TSKgel SuperHZM-H. The calibration curves are shown below.

Main characteristics for SuperHZ-type columns are:

  • TSK-GEL SuperHZ columns have been developed for High Throughput, High Efficiency GPC applications such as those encountered in combinatorial chemistry experiments.
  • Ultra-low sample adsorption, i.e., the columns show true size exclusion behavior for most polymers
  • Maximum operating temperature for SuperHZ-type columns is 60°C for SuperHZ1000, SuperHZ2000, SuperHZ2500 and SuperHZ3000, and 80°C for the remaining columns in the product line. See SuperH-type columns for operating temperatures of 140°C.
  • Limited solvent range. The columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a limited number of organic solvents as shown below.

Beware of extra-column bandbroadening
Column dimensions are 6mm ID x 15cm and 4.6mmID x 15cm versus 7.8mm ID x 30cm for conventional GPC columns. The smaller column dimensions translate to a reduction of peak volume by a factor of 3.4 (6mm ID) and a factor of 5.8 (4.6mm ID) versus the same component eluting from a corresponding Hxl column. Thus, your HPLC system may require optimization of components that can give rise to extra-column bandbroadening, such as connecting tubing, injector, injection volume, detector cell volume, and detector time constant.

Columns with linear calibration curves
The TSK-GEL SuperHZ product line contains three linear, or mixed-bed columns, in which particles with different pore sizes are blended to provide an extended linear calibration curve. The mixed-bed columns feature increasing linear calibration ranges, from TSKgel SuperHZM-L, SuperHZM-N, SuperHZM-H.

TSK-GEL SuperMulitporeHZ-type Columns

The Tosoh GPC Tradition
Tosoh introduced its first line of GPC columns in 1971 and its first GPC instrument in 1972. Ever since, Tosoh scientists have made important contributions to advances in polymer analysis by Gel Permeation Chromatography.

At the 2008 Pittsburgh Conference, Tosoh Bioscience introduced the EcoSEC HLC-8320GPC GPC System, the 7th generation of dedicated GPC instruments. The EcoSEC GPC system allows faster MW determination at a lower cost per analysis. These advancements have been made possible by integrating HPLC system design with Tosoh's innovative multi-pore particle synthesis technology.

Multi-pore particle synthesis technology
Using this proprietary technology, Tosoh can manufacture particles containing a broad range of pore sizes. This innovative approach essentially creates a linear calibration curve within each particle. As a result, columns with an extended linear calibration curve can now be prepared without mixing particles of different pore sizes.

 

Products
First introduced in a 5 micron particle format, TSKgel MultiporeHxl-M column dimensions are 7.8mm ID x 30cm for use in conventional GPC systems.

Now, the innovative multi-pore technology is also available in  3, 4 and 6 micron TSK-GEL SuperMultiporeHZ-type columns, each featuring a distinctly different linear part of the calibration range as shown in the Figure on the right.

Multi-pore Technology

Graphical representations and technical data illustrate the multi-pore particle synthesis technology developed by Tosoh scientists.

The characteristics of the technology is shown in Figure 1. The scanning electron micrographs in Figuire 2 demonstrate the monodispersity of the particle size distribution, while Figure 3 shows that the pore volume of SuperMultiporeHZ particles is distributed over a wide range of pore sizes. The main benefit of multi-pore technology, a smooth chromatogram without inflection points, is shown in the chromatogram in Figure 4.

In general, columns with an extended linear clibration range can be constructed in one of three ways.

  • The simplest way to obtain an extended linear calibration range is to couple columns, each containing particles with distinct pore size distributions. It is inevitable that the resulting calibration curve will deviate from linearity between each pore size range, resulting in irregularities in the chromatogram.
  • The irregularities in chromatograms occur less frequently in the case of mixed-bed columns. Mixed-bed columns are prepared by mixing batches of particles each containing a narrow pore size distribution. However, inflection points in chromatograms can still arise due to a mismatch of pore sizes.
  • Such inflection points are no longer observed with columns packed from particles prepared by multi-pore technology, as shown below in Figure 4.

TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ-M,N,H

The innovative multi-pore technology is now also available in 3, 4 and 6 micron TSK-GEL SuperMultiporeHZ columns. Three columns, varying in linear range, are available. The base material of each TSKgel SuperMultiporeHZ column is poly(styrene/divinylbenzene).

As shown earlier, particles in TSK-GEL SuperMultiporeHZ columns are mono-disperse in size and exhibit a broad range of pore sizes. Each particle, by design, has an extended linear calibration curve, thereby greatly diminishing chromatograms with inflection points.

GPC chromatograms without inflection points . . . it will take some getting used to.
