TSK-GEL GPC columns for organic-soluble polymers are packed with spherical particles composed of polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene (PS-DVB). Main differences between the available product lines are highlighted in the Table below.
Tosoh redefines GPC calibration.
Tosoh's innovative multi-pore technology produces particles that contain a broad range of pore sizes. Columns with an extended linear calibration curve can now be prepared without mixing particles of different pore sizes.
TSK-GEL SuperH and TSK-GEL SuperHZ columns were developed for High-Throughput GPC applications. Both product lines feature particle sizes down to 3μm, a column length of 15cm and column diameters of 6mm ID and 4.6mm ID (SuperHZ only).
TSK-GEL Hxl and TSK-GEL Hhr columns are conventional GPC columns of 7.8mm ID x 30cm, while particles sizes are 5µm and larger for the larger pore size columns. |
Highlights

Tosoh manufactures two distinct product lines for GPC of organic-soluble polymers. While each line is based on particles prepared from polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene, they differ in:

TSK-GEL Hxl-type, SuperHZ-type, and SuperMultiporeHZ-type columns are most inert to sample adsorption.
- TSK-GEL Hhr- and SuperH-type columns provide minimal shrinking and swelling of the column bed when changing solvents and allow operation up to 140°C.
- Small particle, narrow bore SuperMultiporeHZ, SuperHZ and SuperH columns provide high efficiency, short analysis times and operating cost.
- Except for SuperMultiporeHZ columns, all other TSK-GEL H-type column lines contain at least five different pore sizes.
- Each product line contains columns for the analysis of oligomers to polymers containing molecular weights as high as as 4 x 10^8Da (estimated).

All product lines contain a number of linear columns that are prepared by blending particles with different pore sizes.

TSK-GEL Hhr-type Columns for Expanded Solvent Compatibility
The TSK-GEL Hhr column line consists of eight columns with different pore sizes, TSKgel G1000Hhr through TSKgel G7000Hhr, and five columns with an extended linear range of the calibration curve. The calibration curves are shown below.

Main characteristics
- Maximum operating temperature for Hhr-type columns is 140°C.
- Broad solvent range. All Hhr-type columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a wide variety of organic solvents as shown below.
- Hhr-type columns are conventional GPC columns with dimensions of 7.8mm ID x 30cm. Most HPLC systems do not require optimization of extra-column bandbroadening effects when working with conventional GPC columns.
Solvent compatibility for TSK-GEL Hhr (and SuperH) columns
The column shipping solvent limits the types of solvents that can be used with each column type.

Notes:
1) In case of SuperH and Hhr, see table below for appropriate flow rates for solvent exchange. After switching to a very polar solvent, switching to a nonpolar is not recommended.
2) All TSK-GEL Hxl, Hhr, SuperHZ and SuperH analytical columns are shipped containing tetrahydrofuran (THF), except High Temperature (HT) columns, which contain o-dichlorobenzene.
3) Prolonged exposure to carbon tetrachloride can corrode the stainless steel parts of a column and an HPLC system.
* 100% methanol cannot be used with H-type columns; use this solvent with TSK-GEL SW-type or Alpha-type columns.

Columns with linear calibration curves
The Hhr product line contains five linear, or mixed-bed columns, in which particles with different pore sizes are blended to provide an extended linear calibration curve. The mixe-bed columns feature increasing linear calibration ranges, from TSKgel GMHhr-L, GMHhr-N, GMHhr-M, to GMHhr-H. TSKgel GMHhr-H(S) HT is a high temeperature mixed bed column shipped in ODCB, o-dichlorobenzene.

TSKgel G1000Hhr columns are packed with rigid, porous, polymer beads. They are used for the non-aqueous separation of small molecules and oligomers less than 1,000 Da. TSK-GEL G1000Hhr columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a wide variety of organic solvents.

TSKgel GMHhr-H(S) HT mixed bed
TSK-GEL GMHhr-H(S) HT mixed bed columns are packed with rigid, 13μm, polymer beads of various pore sizes. They are used for the high temperature analysis of very large polymers having a broad molecular weight range where shear forces need to be minimized. TSK-GEL GMHhr-H(S) HT columns are shipped in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB). This solvent cannot be exchanged to other solvents.
The issue of shearing that occurs with the analysis of ultra high molecular weight polymers is overcome by the TSKgel GMHhr-H(S) HT column. The (S) is a reference to this shearing effect.

TSK-GEL SuperH-type Columns for Expanded Solvent Compatibility
The TSK-GEL SuperH column line consists of eight columns with different pore sizes, TSKgel SuperH1000 through TSKgel SuperH7000, and four columns with an extended linear range of the calibration curve. The calibration curves are shown below. SuperH-type columns are high efficiency/high throughput versions of the conventional Hhr columns. Both column types are based on the same bead chemistry.

Main characteristics
- Maximum operating temperature for SuperH-type columns is 140°C.
- Broad solvent range. All SuperH-type columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a wide variety of organic solvents, as is shown below.
- SuperH-type columns are high efficiency, high-throughput gel permeation (HT-GPC) columns with dimensions of 6mm ID x 15cm.

The column shipping solvent limits the types of solvents that can be used with each column type.

Notes:
1) In case of SuperH and Hhr, see table below for appropriate flow rates for solvent exchange. After switching to a very polar solvent, switching to a nonpolar is not recommended.
2) All TSK-GEL Hxl, Hhr, SuperHZ, and SuperH analytical columns are shipped containing tetrahydrofuran (THF), except High Temperature (HT) columns, which contain o-dichlorobenzene.
3) Prolonged exposure to carbon tetrachloride can corrode the stainless steel parts of a column and an HPLC system.
* 100% methanol cannot be used with H-type columns; use this solvent with TSK-GEL SW-type or Alpha-type columns.
** TSK-GEL H columns may be specially ordered with this shipping solvent.

Beware of extra-column bandbroadening
The volume of a SuperH column is 3.4 times smaller than that of a conventional 7.8mm x 30cm column. As a result, peak volumes will be proportionally smaller on SuperH-type columns compared to a corresponding Hhr column. Thus, your HPLC system may require optimization of components that can give rise to extra-column bandbroadening, such as connecting tubing, injector, injection volume, detector cell volume, and detector time constant. Columns with linear calibration curves
The TSK-GEL SuperH product line contains four linear or mixed-bed columns, in which particles with different pore sizes are blended to provide an extended linear calibration curve. The mixed-bed columns feature increasing linear calibration ranges, from TSKgel SuperHM-L, SuperHM-N, SuperHM-M, to SuperHM-H.

TSK-GEL SuperH1000 columns are packed with rigid, porous, polymer beads. They are for the non-aqueous separation of small molecules and oligomers less than 1,000 Da. TSK-GEL SuperH1000 columns are shipped in THF, which can be exchanged for a wide variety of organic solvents.
