Designed specifically and exclusively for the characterization of polyolefins, the Viscotek High Temperature GPC (HT-GPC) system brings advanced triple detector technology to this demanding application. The HT-GPC operates up to 160°C to handle even the toughest polypropylene samples and is engineered in a modular format for flexibility, reliability and easy maintenance.
The system is available in four detector configurations:
- Conventional Calibration – using RI (refractive index) detection with column calibration
- Light Scattering – using RI + light scattering (LALS) detection for direct molecular weight measurement without column calibration.
- Universal Calibration – using RI + Viscometer detection to give true molecular weights plus branching data.
- Triple Detection – using RI + Viscometer + light scattering (LALS) for direct molecular weight measurement and branching data.

In the full triple detector configuration the Viscotek HT-GPC system will provide absolute molecular weight without extrapolation or correction, molecular size (Rg and Rh), intrinsic viscosity and branching in a single GPC/SEC experiment.
All detectors reside within a temperature-controlled oven compartment which has space for four analytical GPC columns. The HT-GPC also features an in-line, self-cleaning filter system.
In all the configurations, the Vortex autoprep/autosampler is a significant new development in sample preparation and delivery for high temperature GPC. It consists of an integrated autosampling device and heated multivial stirrer so the sample is dissolved and automatically injected with temperature control to 160°C. This increases efficiency, enhances precision and promotes safety by removing the operator from the sample preparation process. The Vortex eliminates the need to transfer hot sample from a preparation vial to an autosampler vial and the HT-GPC filters the sample automatically on injection.
The whole process of sample preparation, sample injection, data acquisition and data calculation is handled by the advanced OmniSEC software. OmniSEC has full polymer branching calculations capability. Analysts can study the polyolefin long chain branching by using the intuitive and powerful Branching View function. This provides a fully interactive graphical user interface to the Zimm-Stockmayer branching calculations.
