Selection of the correct column is essential for successful GPC/SEC experiments as obtaining the best chromatographic separation requires a careful match of sample, solvent and column. In most cases, the solubility of the sample will clearly dictate when you need to use an aqueous or organic eluent.

Note: Protein samples
Urea or 6 M guanidine aqueous solutions, which are commonly used as protein modifiers, can be used as the eluent. An eluent containing surfactant, such as SDS or Brij-35, is recommended for samples such as membrane proteins when their solubility in water is poor. |

Viscotek T-columns are designed for the separation of organic polymers and oligomer by gel permeation chromatography/size exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC). The packing material is a porous styrene divinylbenzene copolymer. There are 14 types of columns for different molecular weight ranges.

Viscotek I-Columns for specialized GPC/SEC applications

The Viscotek I-Series speciality columns are designed for the separation of difficult to elute polar organic polymers. The packing is a fluorinated, highly crossed-linked di-vinyl-benzene (DVB) gel that resists degradation during quick solvent changes, ideal for scouting different solvents. Quick solvent change in one hour (e.g. from THF to DMF). This inert column is compatible from toluene to formic acid and can support up to 20% water.
